Al Haya (modesty, shyness, self respect, bashfulness...

Abu Hurraira radiyal laahu anhu narrated that the messenger of Allah salalaahu aleyhiwassalam said,"Faith is about sixty branches and modesty is part of faith".

Ibn Umar radiyalaahu anhu narrated that the messenger of Allah salalaahu aleyhiwassalam passed an Ansari man who was admonishing (dissaproving) his brother regarding Al Haya". On that the prophet of Allah salalaahu aleyhiwassalam said, "Leave him! as Al Haya is part of faith.

The word haya mentioned above doesn’t have a single meaning however carries several meanings. Among those meanings are self respect, bashfulness, modesty, shyness and honour. Haya is the opposite of being proud because the messenger of Allah tells us in The Kitaabul emaan that one who possesses an atoms weight of pride will not enter jannah. As modesty is one of the 60 branches of faith someone who lacks this characteristic does not possess complete faith.
