Signs of a Munaafiq (Hypocrite)
Ibn Amr (ra) narrated that the messenger of Allah said; “Whomever has the following four characteristics will be a pure hypocrite and whomever has one of the following characteristics will have one characteristic of a hypocrite unless and until he gives it up”. The characteristics include: 1. Telling lies constantly
2. The breaking of promises
3. When he makes an agreement he proves deceitful
4. Whenever he quarrels he does so in an evil and insulting manner.
There are two types of hypocrites; one who conceals his kufur (disbelieve) and the second is someone who might be a true believer however may possess the characteristics of a munaafik due to their upbringing or other factors. The punishment for those who lie is that their mouth, nose and eyes will be ripped continuously, from one side all the way to the other side.
Truth leads to piety and piety leads to paradise. The messenger of Allah (saw) said; “He will keep speaking the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person and a liar will keep telling lies until he is recorded with Allah as a lair”. If you find that you carry one of these traits you try your utmost to stop and also notify your brothers and sisters if these characteristics are present in their personalities. Munaafiqs are those who claim to be Muslim however conceal their disbelieve and in terms of prayer they stand up in laziness. A munaafik is viewed even worse than a disbeliever and their final abode will be the lowest pits of hell. The punishment for those who distort ahadieth and quran is that Allah will be built a house for them in hell.
If one lies using Allah’s name he has to feed 10 masaakiin (poor people) and if one is unable to do so then he must fast for 3 days. To lie and use Allah name is one of the major sins. When two people are conversing about goodness then Allah is there third and there is profit for those concerned and as soon as someone lies or exhibits a foul characteristic then Allah will leave and there is no profit. Every abusive, proud, violent person will taste the hellfire if they don’t repent. One must learn these characteristics not to accuse others of them but to refrain and stay away from them.
